starfleetemblem

I realize that it’s been a little while since I’ve posted any artwork, so today I will post my sketch of the new Starfleet emblem.  Everyone will wear one as a personal communicator.  It looks significantly different than what was shown on episodes that showcased the future (with the arrowhead outline in front of two vertical bars).  I took the same basic design of the “current” emblem, with the silver arrowhead, and dispensed with the oval or rectangular backdrop (or any kind of backdrop).  The sphere I have near the pit of the arrowhead will be colored based on the division of the officer (i.e. red for command, yellow for engineering, etc.), which will further differentiate the officers in addition to the uniforms.  The generic emblem will have the sphere colored purple.  My illustrators are currently working on a polished image of the emblem.

The new emblem is hardly integral to the plot (which is why I’m posting it before the book is released), but for the sake of having everything new, I re-designed it anyway.  I would imagine this far forward into the future Starfleet would want to have a new symbol to represent the Federation.  I again went with a more angular design (seems to be a common theme in my work), but the overall shape remains the same.  My research suggests that there is little meaning in the designs of any of the Starfleet emblems, so I won’t pretend like there is meaning behind mine, either.  What can I say?  To me, it feels right for the 25th century.
