I hope everyone enjoyed reading Reemergence as much as I enjoyed writing it.  Reemergence came out of my love for the Star Trek franchise, and a general hunger to see Trek with an entirely new way.  I tried very hard not to make it another ‘TNG-copy,’ which generally would have been pointless. To me, what I have outlined in Reemergence is just the tip of the iceberg.  I think there are more possibilities in a new Star Trek than even Paramount realizes (beyond ‘a war is brewing in the Alpha Quadrant…’).  In fact, I had to scale back a bit on some of my ideas because at some point it would have stopped reading like a Star Trek.  So no, to answer the question of one of my earlier posts, I don’t think the post-TNG era is dead.  Not by a long shot.

Goals for 2011

The site will still be dedicated to Star Trek for the next little while, but to what capacity, I have not decided yet.  In the meantime, I have hired others to help add more color to my characters and interpretation of the Star Trek universe.  I have an illustrator who is actively working on new artwork, which will be posted shortly.  I will also make a PDF version of the book and make it available to read on the iPad and iPhone.

I have goals to add the following throughout the year (in no particular order):

  • More artwork;
  • Character Bios;
  • PDF/i-Pad-compatible copies of the book;
  • Print-on-demand (POD)
  • Audiobook;
  • Backstories to each of the main characters;
  • Trailer

The PDF/i-Pad compatible versions of the book should be available starting next month.  I also intend on creating audio tracks for each of the chapters, and I am already in the process of interviewing for voice actors.

I also intend on creating a formal printed copy of the book, including illustrations from Anthony Pugh, character bios, and author commentary.  I know there are really only a handful of people out there who actually read the book from beginning to end, but for those of you who have, a printed copy will be made available to you, too.  I will set up a formal request page for those of you who are interested, and the book will be made available absolutely free of charge.  My goal is to have it available on July 1, 2011.

The most expensive and time-consuming project will be the trailer.  I actually have no idea how I am going to carry this out, but if there are any of you out there who might actually be able to help me out in this regard (i.e. financing, technical skill, artistic skill, production capacity, etc.), then please drop me a line!

What’s Next

Though I had an incredible amount of fun working on this series, because of copyright issues with Paramount/CBS studios (thank you for not suing me), I am interested in moving on with projects that stand on their own.  In fact, by year’s end, I will likely remove most of Reemergence from the site.  But because I love my characters so much, there is a good chance that at some point I will return to this series with shorter stories.

It should come as no surprise that I need a short break from actual writing, but I am interested in moving forward with new projects.  What that means is that I am in brainstorming/research mode.  In fact, I’m currently in discussions with independent director/producer Jordan Horowitz on a film idea, and I’m extremely excited about the project (sorry, it won’t be a Star Trek, unfortunately).  In regards to a new book, I am currently experimenting with different subject areas within science that I think might be interesting to write.

Support the Site!

I certainly had a lot of fun keeping up with this website.  I intend on adding more and more layers to the website but it is resource intensive.  If any of you enjoyed the book, then one way you can help is sharing the book with others.  Additional comments and reviews are always welcome.  In fact, if you have a well thought-out and written review, positive or negative, I will publish it on this site.  And of course, if there are any skills that you have that could help make Reemergence come alive with any of the above projects, then be sure to drop me a line!

Special Thanks

A very special thanks goes to James Beil, Emily Sun, Robert Scorpio, and Gibraltar, all of who read several iterations of my book and gave me invaluable feedback.  In fact, I should return the favor by referring you to some of Gibraltar’s stories as well as Robert Scorpio’s, all of which can be found at the Ad Astra fan fiction site here.  And of course, I have to thank all of you who visited the site, and waited patiently for each chapter to come out.

Check back again soon!

Sincerely,

Hugo Calvin
